Liberation 3: Oscar De La Renta Barbie

I admit it.. I’m a child of the 80’s. And I still think that the fashions Oscar de la Renta designed for Barbie are some of her best ever. So I couldn’t possibly resist this doll.

The Doll

I love the face paint on this doll. All those subtle, gentle earth tones make for a face that will look good no matter what you dress her in. The earrings are a little guady, in my opinion, but i have to admit they match the dress nicely. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to take off her tiara without ruining her hair. Oh well, it does match the earrings.

All I can think of to say for her hairstyle is ‘wow’! This hairstyle is gorgeous, elaborate, and properly sewn in place. Oh, there’s the usual thick hairspray, but there’s a lot of nice brown thread here. Lovely.

Well, Mattel got this half right. Her butt is not white, but it does have those stupid molded ‘B’s. I suppose I should be grateful, but somehow I can’t quite seem to manage it. The body is the standard straight waist, three weak leg clicks, with the Shani arm molds. One tiny, nice gold ring.

The Outfit

I have no idea where anyone would really wear a dress like this, but who cares? The skirt is big and romantic, and the fabric first class. The seams were not as well done as I would have liked, but then, it is Mattel. All pieces are secured with snaps… no velcro anywhere!

This outfit is designed with contrast in mind. The deep brown lace is nothing short of gorgeous. The jacket is nice, with lots of trim- ribbons, fur, and hand beading- but I have to admit it does absolutely nothing for me. The floor-sweeping shawl is a much better choice. Her shoes are the classic open toe style, in the proper brown. And she even has satin panties!
